John Sloan, Sun and Wind on the Roof

WHAT THE WIND TOOK

Tis a fierce wind that blows from the roof top,

And she no gentle maiden struggles, to

Keep a balance of pride and fortitude.

For what more has she to lose? left behind

Barefooted and aloof on a roof, to

Pin these garments cleansed of yesterdays dole,

When she mothered him, along with her child.

She should have let go of him a long time,

Like those slippers were, cast off to the wind.

What was he father? what was he a husband ?

What was he? she asks herself, and the wind,

Blew and blew that day, so that her slippers off and flew away.
