 One Uni Verse

The mighty sun worships Dry Season;

And at its height is the Carnival;

That time of year, that season that sphere,

When music is king, queen and clown.

So the masqueraders spend elaborate sums

On hair, nails, foot gear, sequins;

 Colour is curator;

All the razzle and dazzle to overwhelm in the streets,

 To tantalize, to dazzle, to mesmerize;

And the spectators, no costume needed;

What do they do?

They dance like the music says to,

Like the masqueraders do,

And for two days the streets are

One uni verse of the dance.

  2. This sounds so spectacular, and not just the two days... all the days, weeks and months of preparation. Here we only eat a rich bun for fat tuesday.

  9. You evoked the music and dancing of carnival in your poem, Gillena. I especially felt it in the lines:
    ‘Colour is curator;
    All the razzle and dazzle to overwhelm in the streets’.

  10. "one uni verse of the dance" YES! I've been to Rio in Brazil the week before Carnival and saw all the preparations and went to a "samba school" to see them practice with their loud band and their gyrations. Amazing! Have seen film of Mardi Gras in New Orleans...I suspect it's similar to your Carnival only perhaps on a smaller scale. A cacophony of color, dancing and music - pure joy! And to be a spectator is just as much fun!
