 HOT DRY HEAT

The flowers bloom,

Obvlious of the heat,

The hardy ones;

Like bougainvillea,

And ixora.

The sky is bright,

A blue sky for sure,

Cumulus; like bagged

Cotton candy at a fair,

The flowers bloom.

Some with thorns,

Some without,

Isn't life like that,

For those pretty ones?

The sky is bright.

You just have to look up;

What is it about azure,

The colour of wonder,

And of blooms,

Some with thorns.

Like barbed wire,

Keeping out,

And sometimes keeping in

Screams, even when

You just have to look up.

Those fearless birds,

Tired of chirping,

Sit and rest;

Some even preen on lines,

Like barbed wire

  1. Beautiful Bougainvillea flowers in your pictures. Your poem of warm spring time in Trinidad works very well.

  2. I. Love. This. The staccato emotion from frail and pretty to dark and doomy, like barbed wire and screams, echoes how everyday life can be gorgeous and lush while at the same time erratic and tragic. Great job!

  3. I like the short lines and rhythm of this poem, Gillena, like tentative steps and gradual blossoming, and I love: ‘Some even preen on lines, / Like barbed wire’.

  8. Oh heat I know...although not dry, certainly not this year. I love the bougainvillea in bloom, it is glorious. I love the colours of your cascade poem flowing down a bit like the bougainvillea itself.
