THE CIRCUS
The circus came to town
I went to see animals
I went to see performers
I went to be amazed
The circus came to town
The big clumsy elephant
Ate peanuts from folks’ hands
In between elephant mouthed smiles
The circus came to town
Tigers snarled fierce teeth
But did what they were told
Folks gasped breaths of unbelief
The circus came to town
There was cotton candy
And innocence and laughter
And baggy pants clowns too
The circus came to town
Trapeze artistes flipped and swirled
There were seats in tiers
There was no burden of cruelty

Sounds like a joyful experience! I'm glad - we've had some dark circuses so far. I love your flipping, swirling trapeze artists - lovely movement words.

A child's-eye view of the circus, the sights, the smells, the excitement. Well said!

The age of innocence and ignorance. We can't pretend we don't know now.

As a child we knew not of the burden, only what seemed to be fun. In that instance for many there is still fond memories of enjoying a circus as you have expounded. Nicely done.

I love the sepia-toned images of this circus — the first line refrain works really well in conveying the simple memory without the burden of the understanding of its cruelty.

As children we gave no thought of cruelty in the fantasies we were seeing. Well done!
