BEHIND THE MASK
A smile to mask the pain of betrayal
When all else fails that smile supports
The shaky foundation of swirling waters
Eddying far beyond the heel of shore

When all else fails that smile supports
The rib cage that trust warrants depart
All that's holding soul to shell to soul
Is that determined refusal of drowning

The shaky foundation of swirling waters
With jaws agape enough to rips to shreds
Hope of belonging in faith of journeying
Hidden in the hurt that smothers living

Eddying far beyond the heel of shore
Horizons dim in misty rainbows sunken
Losing hues in watery spasms cajoling
A smile to mask the pain of betrayal

  1. How deep and full of pain this poem is Gillena as the masquerade of love is revealed through betrayal drowning all hopes of reconciliation. How well you expressed it.

  2. "A smile to mask the pain of betrayal" Been there, done that, didn't help but preserved my dignity. Deep emotion in this poem

  3. Oh Gillena, this is beautifully tender and emotive 💕💕I can relate to the pain and the anguish in this poem. We have all at some point in our lives been betrayed by the people whom we never could have imagined would be capable of the task. Especially love the lines; " With jaws agape enough to rips to shreds. Hope of belonging in faith of journeying, hidden in the hurt that smothers living" Beautifully penned. Thank you so much for participating at Prompt Nights and for your constant love and support 💕💕

  4. Betrayal rips at the soul... especially when it comes from a face that smiled at us first. Such pain.

  5. Oh, I agree. Betrayal, more especially by people we trust, sends us scurrying for our masks. An acute and beautifully penned piece, Gillena.

  6. There is a wonderful rhythm in this - like a song sung to carry the self on despite the pain underneath.. a wonderful poem
