ST JOSEPH'S DAY HAIBUN
When i was a child, calypsoes were not to be sung during the season of Lent [not so nowadays], however on St Joseph's Day one could take a break from the seriousness, and yes, on that day we could sing calypsoes and dance, in the school yard, in the street or at home. There was also a betting game we children played. In that we crossed fingers and deceided what we were giving up for Lent. Be it ice cream or cake or sweets etc and should one of us stray from this and another person or persons of the bet saw us we were in for some good slaps with the words LENT, LENT, LENT. Except on St Joseph's Day of course.

Thank you for the invitation to link up, Gillena! I enjoyed your St Joseph's Day haibun. In my haibun for dVerse this evening, I included a YouTube video of Harry Belafonte singing 'Scarlet Ribbons'. I also remember 'Island in the Sun', another song my mother used to sing to me. Back then I didn't realise it was a calypso.
ReplyDeleteYes it is Kim. So happy you linked in here also.

Blessings Gillena. Wow , you certainly had some fun dancing calypsoes at school.I have failed several times already in my Lenten resolve to give up sweets. Every year I try and fail. The spirit is willing but every year the flesh is getting weaker:)

Love the thought of having one day to take a break from lent... I have a feeling that it was more austere in our dark Lutheran north...
