WINDING
To the mouse with four tiny feet
The stairway is its eternity.
Not to be encumbered of numbers
Nor to be absorbed of time

The stairway; is an existence
Not of direction
Nor of inclination
The stairway is just that

Elegant and winding to human feet
Treading through the history of an era

Or the challenge of an ancient
Dulled by mutation of anatomy

The stairway remains the cliche
With its creaks and winding ways.

  4. Stairways are definitely mesmerizing especially the spiraling ones. We are mice in the universe always maneuvering stairs. Thanks so much for writing!

  5. A hundred percent correct, Gillena. Stairs hold for us mystery and intrigue most everywhere we encounter them. I remember several occurrences growing up that involved a stairway. One even romantic in the first grade. The storm cellar stairs, where she tried to teach me of the 'birds and bees.' She learned, I failed the lesson.

  7. I can remember when we went on holiday with the kids and stayed in a hotel the first thing we had to do was explore and go up the stairs as far as we could and then all the way down again just so we hadn't missed anything! We didn't see any mice though, which was just as well or the kids would have wanted to take them home.

    1. 😊good that you did not see any mice.
There is a lovable cartoon mouse my 5 year old granddaughter loves. He dances and sings with kids at Chuck E Cheese birthday parties.

  8. Your mouse with four tiny feet reminded me of a hamster we had when I was a child, Gillena. It escaped from its cage and managed to get all the way upstairs, onto my parents' bed, across my mother's forehead and into the pocket of my father's pyjama top, where it fell asleep!

  9. the opening .... the reference to a mouse .... this sets a literal idea and then you transform it to the metaphorical .... and so we climb the stairs together, reading your words .... lovely :)

  10. I like the mouse image. I've scurried up, dragged myself up, pulled myself up, and took it two at a time but now take it one step at a time because the top is getting too near.
