comfortable likable sandals
they are blue,
the colour of my sky
five minutes ago
before the greyness
sitting on the mountain top
filled with sounds of raindrops
everywhere birds would sing
their chicken feet
and talon toes grasping air
to land on tree branches
where leaves grow
anchored in the ages
from sinewy stalks
to bark and lichen covered
trunks
not the kind elephants wear
they say tree spirits dance
around silk cotton trees
these kapoks witness
the backward turned
feet
of children
whose unbaptized souls
dare to wander the night
nevertheless
as for me
i'll wear them again
and again
my new
comfortable likable sandals
they are blue,
the colour of my sky
five minutes ago

Ah, they sound very comfortable indeed. Really they remind me of my favorite summer shoe that I wear most everywhere! Comfort definitely IS key.

Gillena,
ReplyDeleteA most uplifting tribute to those beautiful blue sandals. A delight to read, but sad that the blue sky you describe, is truly hidden from me, for now, by snow clouds!!!
Eileen
I like the idea of blue sandals as I love comfortable shoes. I enjoyed what your poem also conveys about the place where you live.
ReplyDeleteNothing beats a good pair of sandals except nothing at all.
ReplyDeleteGreat piece.
If it wasn't so cold where I live right now, I would certainly be wearing a pair of sandals. I'm kind of jealous that you are able to.
ReplyDeleteWarm wishes Eileen, thanks for dropping in

I like the repeated "they are blue,
ReplyDeletethe colour of my sky
five minutes ago"...
and the elephant line! Ha!
A thoughtful and edifying piece that sent me off looking into "the backward turned
ReplyDeletefeet of children whose unbaptized souls dare to wander the night" as I vaguely recalled hearing of that lore, many years ago. A fascinating mosaic on the prompt.
if i was given the choice i would go bare foot...but sandals would def be second...it will be different for each of us though...the same as it is or would be for animals.....the unbaptized children line did get me....
ReplyDeleteNice comfy on the feet, I like the color of your sky ~
