WHORL OF ZINNIA PETALS - A Fold Poem

The zinnias were single whorled

They were pretty pinks and bright

Back in the day when i was a child

How i loved  too the orange bursts.

Our zinnias were single whorled

The Barbados Pride and the Vandas

The variety of colour always heeded

Reds, purples, and sunny yellows

A bouquet in which i ever reveled

Days of pulling out weeds by hand

My zinnias were single whorled

DUODORA - SOME TRUTH

Humbly  humbly

Bow creativity

Curtains rise and fall

Drama takes mid stage

Lies are not fiction

Creativity needs loud applauding

Off with your heads spirits of the untruth

Humbly  humbly

Those grinning skeletons

 Sorry excuses

Imperfect species

Oh for Suzi's sake!

Take responsibility right the wrongs

Forsooth just sweeten the pot with some truth

HAIBUN - FEAR
My heart thumps the wildest, when the earth shakes
the slightest tremor, the loudest quake. Seconds of life slip away. To where i retreat, my mind leaves
no trace. Like dying again and again, without the preps for the surgeon's knife.

The knives, bombs, guns, that anger and hatred dish out to  the starving appetite of war,
via mass media, be it fact be it  fictions. Those stories i can live without. Such are the violent events that bring terror to my heart.

There is fear too in loneliness, but there, challenges for joy in solitude reward the willing learner.

sometimes the dawn
lingers too long in absence
of bird whistles

Then Came The Pandemic Locknut

Humans hiding why should we care?

Something's amiss way over there

In lockdown ?

All of the doors shut and bolted?

And the window views assorted?

A lockbox!

Is that how the blue planet is?

Measuring distances gee whiz!

Sure lockout!

They are dealing with health issues?

Is there a shortage of tissues?

A locksmith?

Why would they be in need of him

When scientist have made vaccines?

Their lockset.

Her ashen countenance, matched well her fear;
Perched at her scared window view.
What was the matter,
With the day's overcast was, its silence.
No words spoken in warning to anyone,
Just this ominous hue,
Of lies already told, not now to be repeated.

UNREQUITED

A sword it was to strike at the heart

Sharp, swift in mercy, no glint of light

How can a season of rain torrent through

To the silence, without the warning thunder

Yet, there it be; fixed, pinned to heartbreak

That foolish allusion of love; unrequited offerings

To underserved  stalwarts of selfish worth

Pierced, friezed,  a sacred monument of dotish pleasure

No lamb, no sacrifice

Only pain, angst, and longing nailed

To a parapet of learning.

Regrets are wasted in continuous flow of life's river

Challenged to  Write a piece of flash fiction or other prose no more than 144 words that includes the line given: “What are the roots that clutch, what branches grow out of this stony rubbish?”--The Wasteland, T.S. Eliot

❧✿❧

TWO NEW WORDS
It was in deep quiet, that he had returned to his friend's planet - Earth. They had promised to keep in touch by siman, but he was never one who liked wrist watches, those times he had sojourned on earth. So he just never got around to keeping in touch. But he knew his friend Adam would welcome him anytime he wanted to visit back.
Where were the cars, the buses, the trains, the aeroplane noises,  the men and women walking the dogs.
What was happening to his friend's blue planet earth?
As he walked a familiar path; the words he once met came to mind again “What are the roots that clutch, what branches grow out of this stony rubbish?” In short where was everyone, what was happening.
Later at his friends house he met with the words pandemic and lockdown. © gillena cox 2021

WHISPERS
The yellow ixoras have responded
To the rain showers
Opened like radiant fairy umbrellas

There are children out in the street
Walking past the curb
Now with the phased openings

A passing car is vibzing
One hundred days Christmas music
Like a mobile parang radio station

I saw the clouds darkening again
But no thunder sounded
In the vast ominous above

In a beautiful gilded way
The evening sun is whispering sayonara
Listen! shh, listen.

Just around the corner is the calypsonian
The kaiso man; guitar strumming, pan beating,
Heart smiling, teasing singer-man.

Everybody's business, is his business.
Politician, hornerman, priest and warner woman prophetess.
Listen to the calypso man.
He, better than reading any newspaper.

He, is who tells all.
Sordid, witty, serious or risque.
He, tells all, all.
Yeah for Octobers !
If only to remember the old greats, the sing-it-all griots of old.
© gillena cox 2021

#Calypso music first emerged in the eighteenth century in Trinidad among communities of African slaves. The musical style was an evolution of West African kaiso, and the satirical lyrics often mocked slave masters through double entendre.

Father of this nation

Your words still echo

To the children shut in

Because of the Covid 19

That their book bags carry

The future of a society

That is T&T

Zoom your home-works

Pay attention to your studies

He must be smiling over them.

Quadrille # 137: Throwing Poem Stones
Along a stony path a mocking bird skips
Stopping now and then when her beak dips
Insects caught between crevasses
Hinder  not her hunger, she passes
Gingerly knowing there they live
Her feathers a preening she will give
Thence evening roosting flight her motive
