The word “advent” is derived from the Latin word “adventus”, which means “coming” – which refers to the coming of Christ.

The advent wreath;  an evergreen wreath with four candles, sometimes with a fifth, white candle in the center.
Some Advent wreaths include a fifth, Christ candle which is lit on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day

The four candles of Advent represent the four Sundays of Advent, and they respectively symbolize hope, peace, joy, and love.

The third candle is pink and symbolizes joy. It is called the “Shepard's Candle,” and is pink because rose is a liturgical color for joy.

  5. Advent blessings to you, Gillena! Since we moved, I found my advent taper candles but not the wreath to hold them. I enjoyed your recipe poem...do you drink sorrel warm or cold?
