NICOTIANA TABACUM
So what shall we do now with her
That broad-leafed gifted allure
That nature shaped so lovingly
Why use, then deem her so impure
She's certainly no poison ivy
To that for sure we are all privy
Furling boldly through air drafts
Nor is she Venus Fly Trap livey
Why reap to smoke her anyway
Is she good for anything, touché
Fodder, insect repellent, healing
She is so much abused now-a-day
Does she have a place in paradise
Where fairy and elf can share a nice
Shade from Eden's sun a-blazing
Why do we not offer to her a reprise

Well, I am hoping for at least a nonsmoking section in Paradise. LOL. I really love the fairy and elf in your poem!

Hmm. The loveliness of the leaf is a new thought to me. Even though I once visited a cigar factory, I have never seen the live plant. I like how you speak of "her." It is possible that if we smoked pure tobacco without chemicals, we could keep the habit and occupy our hands and lips in graceful gestures. Such an unpredictable poem! I'd grant her a reprieve. Smile.

Curiously my grandfather grew his own tobacco as he was a pipe smoker and managed to get to 88!

Nice point of view here Gillena...why shouldn't a plant find a place in paradise because humans don't know any better!

You certainly gave a fresh perspective on tobacco plant. And you ask interesting questions, "Does she have a place in paradise..."
ReplyDeleteBrilliant response to the prompt!

I am so averse to tobacco that I would even weed the ornamental type out of flower mixes!! We get to see these plants here...they look pretty no doubt!
ReplyDeleteThanks Gellina for sharing your beautiful thought... :)

...which is to say, it all depends on how we use (or abuse) a plant...

Pretty plant meant to be left to its original purpose like toadstools and lovely berries. If you eat them they kill you.
