THIS MASK
What's behind these hazel eyes, sigh!
years added up,
scored sixty-eight,
with moons, some blue.

The mask is a beauty aid, sigh!
merely to wear,
only minutes,
pause and refresh;

Once that mask is removed then, yeah!
for worth of care,
tis fresh new mien,
hey world out there;

Watch out, for life's worth living, yeah!
dashing, daring,
diva, demure,
today's a dare.

  3. Watch out, for life's worth living, yeah!

    This would work so well as spoken word.. especially with a back beat.

  7. Solo much waste behind that mask beauty, intelligence, healthy spirits, and much much more that could be released. Did David's wife, Bathsheba, King Solomon's wife, have a mask to remove? She has scared the bejeebers out a third of the world for ages now.

  8. I agree with Kerry, this would be a good poem for spoken word.

  13. "Watch out, for life's worth living, yeah!" -- Which sums up all that you eloquently share as we come out from (or don) those masks "dashing, daring,/diva, demure" in ageless beauty. Daring indeed. Beautifully written, Gillena. I love the rhythm and alliteration in this, which feel so natural, uncontrived. Yeah!

  18. The use of repetition in this poem is effective, Gillena, it adds to the rhythm, and I can imagine it readd or sung. I love the idea of ‘years added up…
    with moons, some blue’, and ‘pause and refresh’ is good advice.
