RAIN FLY
They danced like fairies, under the lamps;
An unstringed mobile in a windless dawn;
A stream of morning consciousness swamp,
Etheral stillness, mesmerizing rhythm,
Soundless, temporary wings, under the lamps;
The morning star, a lone bright light, kept
Sentient watch over night's dissolving ramp;
Assembling cloud wisps into grey mounds;
Fragile wings in courtship attraction to amps,
In the quiet street enlivening the new morning;
Rain flies, in amber glow under the lamps.

"They danced like fairies, under the lamps;
ReplyDeleteAn unstringed mobile in a windless dawn;" I've seen that and it is the perfect description. Lovely
As a child, I loved the flying ants, their diaphanous wings and how they mysteriously appeared in the rain.
ReplyDeleteYour poem brought it all back to me - such a perfect description. One of your best.
Thanks for your appreciation Kerry

I really enjoyed this poem, Gillena. Now I'm older I have time again to wonder at nature. I really like the lines:
ReplyDelete'An unstringed mobile in a windless dawn';
'Assembling cloud wisps into grey mounds';
and
'Rain flies, in amber glow under the lamps'.

We had them, doing a nuptial flight after the rain. Bunches of them fell into our pool. But we did skim them out. I imagine it would be quite a sight to see them under a street light.
ReplyDeleteBut I don't want to see any more of them.
..
Lucky you. We are in a very cold winter here. Beautiful description of the rain flies under the lamp.
