Monday WRites152

[all internet images used in this mosaic. Fair Use]

UNDER MILLION STARS
Wine me a heady sweet muscat
Bright moon sentinels no chat
Music me with guitar strums
For night of repast surely is at

Dance you stars in somber sky
While we amazed to wonder fly
By whispers sweet and sensuous
Fill our tryst with arduous high

When sated love uncovered now
Wrap entwined its fantasy cow
Trinket poems in garlands strung
Like lamplight to moth staying vow

ARCH OF COLOUR
If i curved a question into arch of colour,
Would yellow be the taste on my tongue?
With sweet aromas of tomorrow, to her
Bosom cling, like spring time daffodils?
If i bridged raindrops into arch of colour,
Would deep overcasts, shoot innocence
Into wretched despair? To sadden mothers:
Gut, joints, blood, bones, dust, and tears;
Into scenarios, macabre enough to holler,
Enough! of horror from gadgets loathsome.
Let love alone; rainbow into arch of colour

KINDNESS UNSPOKEN
A smile a nod, not a word said
Such is kindness on a day foul or fair

A smile a nod, not a word said
Gentle hand outstretched received in prayer

A smile a nod, not a word said
Soup steaming hot in the belly of hunger bare

A smile a nod, not a word said
Umbrellas shared in a drizzle with flair

A smile a nod, not a word said
That hug, dearly departed laid to rest, for fare

Virtue or Vice
Prompted by Rommy. Challenged: to consider virtues and vices, or more specifically the Seven Deadly Sins or the Seven Heavenly Virtues. The Seven Deadly Sins are Lust, Gluttony, Greed, Sloth, Wrath, Envy and Pride. The Seven Heavenly Virtues are Chastity, Temperance, Charity, Diligence, Patience, Kindness and Humility. Your poem must include at least one of the names of the Virtues or Vices (and I know several of you will be tempted to use more than one - that's Pride right there).

MORNING A MYSTERY
This is the mystery of morning
When conscious breath is roused
Witness to whistlers and twitterers
In a frenzy of creation stirring
As Mocking bird and Kiskadee pledge
A song to each heart on knowing
No longer the shadow tones of dreams
Here now is reality for day's keeping

Returning sunset to dawn's place,

TRINIDAD - LAND OF THE HUMMINGBIRD [MAKING MYTHS 6]
She was pretty, she was cute.
She had big dreams;
But she was small, too small
In the eyes of her tribe.

She was pretty, she was cute.
She had big dreams;
She flew back and forth.
She flew backwards and forwards.

Now's when, Jealousy, the bird of woe,
Flies into this poem.
She, and many of her jealous kind,
could only fly forward.

One night, Jealousy stole some stars.
She and her cohorts bounded Yerette,
Placing in her beak, starlight.
Then, they went to Greatest Honourable Bird.

Look! see! Yerette has eaten some of the stars.
Of course Yerette was banished from Cloud Patch.
She flew and flew till her wings were weary.
Then she, exhausted, flew backwards.

Bumping into a rock,
The starlight expelled from her bound beak.
And there it was: three, now starlit, Mountains.
She pledged herself to this uninhabited place,
Making it her own.

She called it Iere.
She plucked feathers from her beautiful wings
And birded this place called Iere
Soon there were charm after charm of hummers.

She blew on her magic flute
And people had dreams; dreams of adventure,
Dreams of conquest in far away lands,
And so they came and peopled her land.

Yerette and her charms were ever more beautiful;
And never never lonely,
And always always admired,
And always always treated kindly.
© gillena cox 2018; TRINIDAD - LAND OF THE HUMMINGBIRD [MAKING MYTHS 6]

NOTE: 1. Yerette - Amerindian word for hummingbird.
2. Trinidad of the Republic of Trinidad And Tobago: Native names: Trinidad, Cairi, Iere, Tukusi, La Isla de la Trinidad, Nickname: Land of the Hummingbird.
3. charm - a group of Hummingbirds

TASTY BITE RHYTHM DANCE AND A CITY
This poem is a tasty bite
This poem is rhythm and dance
This poem is a city

Early in the morning - throngs,
Long standing queues,
A nod to the question: hot or slight
Settles the amount of pepper to Doubles.
This poem is a tasty bite.

Children's carnival - Main Road alive,
Intricate patterns costume their way,
'we beat' festival - pan in the streets,
And beautiful tadjahs at Hosay.
This poem is rhythm and dance.

Such is the vibe of Western Main Road
Loath to sleep, until wee hours,
When the bars close their keep
Tasty feisty insomniac, is St James.
This poem is a city.

Monday WRites 150

[used images from the internet for today's mosaic]

BUMPING IN NUMBERS
Back then, [circa 1963]:
Leaving Central, along the way,
Sugarcane arrows look up to azure skies.
At the Croisee, in San Juan [we say Sawah],
We meet a new bustling vibe.
Up the Saddle Road to the school.
Us early folks in crisp pleated plaid skirts,
And white shirts,
Would absorb extra time playing Moral.
In boxes one to eight, the ball bumps.
Box One: one bump, and so on, and so forth;
Before the school bell sounds.
Chalk is white and balls are grey.
Ah, but [2018]...
Balls are much prettier now-a-days.

And lurking around the bend from Summer;
Autumn, with its box of crayola colours.
Child's play in the hand of creation's plan.

OF APPLES EATEN
Back then i was flesh of his flesh, and bone of his bones, so when he handed me that delicious, ripe, juicy apple, I bit into it, sinking my teeth into our despised future; whence i came to love him and hate him, yet was never complete without him.

Anger blazed in the fire of God's wrath, for him and me; we had eaten, and the naked truth was, we should not have; so helpless, were we, we tried to hide the taste of apple, camouflaged in fig leaves.

Who can hide from God? of course he saw us there cringing in our sorry disobedience, and being God, he clothed us in warmth of skins; a miracle we thought.

That was how we came to know the word clothes; of course, later in generations to come, synonyms like: design and fashion came into being.

PONDERING MORNING
When i stand, staring at the mountains.
From whence a thousand words fountain
Meanderings, to my muse, only she hears;
Oftentimes, of this i am most certain.

Such colours are of the rainbow blessed;
Trees, birds, flowers, variously dressed,
Representing a romp of creation's idea.
To planet earth, all of which is bequest.

A sip of coffee in morning reverie,
Of rain, sunshine, warmth, and every
Utterance of birdsong beneath clouds.
Chance laughter to fill day's glory.

Those days, memories play in mind's garden,
Smiles wonder at youth's ego, oh pardon;
The wild spurts of youthful brashness
These figures add up to favourful laden
