one feather a 2009 haiga

SOUNDING TIME
Every sound, universal in language;
Harmony of heartbeats, weathered
In time's eternal reality, wrought
Of hammer and anvil, carved
Rock, crafted stone;

Every sound, universal, a language;
Answers to river, flowing around
Hope, in path of time journeying,
Where destiny takes to flight,
Twittering birds

Every sound, universal in language;
Sketching hues, golden in sunsets;
Silver clouds, for morning dawns
Magnificent, in feathered callings;
Melody, for colour.

  1. Very cool. I've also been thinking about the language of bird song/sound, wondering if it is universal or if we'd have to translate it to get its meaning. But that might be an intrusion into a world made safer by inscrutability. Leave me with rivers, feathered soundings and "melody. For color." Thanks.

  5. I like to think that each bird species have their own language except for warning calls,
    How else can doves coo romantically and not have all the other birds know what they are saying?

  11. "Every sound, whether a heartbeat or a bird call is universal in language;" and "all journeying in path of time"...an absolute truth.

  12. This is a beautiful poem, Gillena. One of your best. You have really made me think about the songs of the birds in our midst; and indeed they are universal and can be 'understood' in every language!
