Sample and Tease: City of Port of Spain

City of Port of Spain;

Rich in history, protest, and monument.

Preserves till today;

A people loving peace,

But loving more justice.

Old quays and cathedrals are welcoming.

Standing tall, The Red House,

Seat of political decision.

Woodford Square, echoing voices

Of change and belief.

Memorial Park, where wreaths draw in, the heroes who died, so we could be, the city today.

Parade of Carnival bands claim The Queens Park Savannah, the largest roundabout in the island;

 Poui in pinks and yellows burst into blossoming, even out-glamouring The Royal Botanic Gardens.

Not forgetting The Emporer Valley Zoo, named for the emporer butterfly.

The pulse of City of Port of Spain; is vibrant and varied. This is just a sample and tease

DOWN TOWN
'Times the Cathedral bells still ring to summon attention
Some prayer still remain trapped in its hall, on its pews,
In its arches above, hopefully rising ever so sloooowly

A spire finger pointing clouds on puffy azure days
Remaining cold silent and reticent in many overcasts
To gaze vagrancy asleep on Woodford Square benches

Downtown Port of Spain when the season of Poui trees
Silent in splendour rival the bells of the Cathedral
When the sunshine stings our conscience to remember

We do remember days of the soapbox verbous campaigner
Who later packed the childrens' futures into their schoolbags
Cramming their little heads with big dreams of statesmanship

A SNIPPET OF THREE CITIES
I
Leaving Scarborough, when you stopped by the women selling the benne balls, they smiled with you a welcoming smile, though you were leaving to get on the boat to go back home.

my initials carved
on the trunk of a tree -
roots of ancients

II
The sea grapes are green. They do well to hide among the leaves. Looking out at the beautiful crystal sea, a jet of sea spray follows the water skier. Puffy white clouds fashion the sky - Grand Anse beach St Georges.

flip flops prove
tedious senseless foot wear -
wet sand hot sand

III
There at Portobello Road, there where the hagglers meet to bargain, just for the tradition of buying and selling in this particular way, I share my smile to a click of the camera . London is foggy I expected a Caribbean kind of sunshine, after all, they told me it was summer

bubble gum ice cream -
a distant tinkling now
growing soft softer
