SECRETS ALIVE IN THE NIGHT
Shrouded thus, in dark secrets of night,
Shy moons hide, in obscure clouds;
Shadows ply their sinister plight,
For all is mystery ever unknown,
Silhouettes ride yon secrets of night,
Hurried messenger, mounts trusty steed
Loathsome arena, jumbies might;
Falling stars, no wish to deny,
Whispered yearnings to skyward sight;
Such is the ether in hidden carousal,
Never never, revealing secrets of night.

  6. As a child I was frightened of silhouettes and shadows revealed by carnival lights at night, and so I am quite ready to believe that these horses and riders are on a carousel. The poem is haunting.

  8. For all its dark mystery the night still has an allure. Perhaps it is those whispering yearning you mention?

  11. I love the rhythm in this poem Gillena - it seemed to add to the darker tone..also conjured up a carousel going around on its own in the dead of night (for some strange reason;)
