DANCE FOR MAY
Why did we dance, twirling and twining;
Ribbons so colourful, and some in our hair;
It was the month of May
And our teachers did say
Dance children dance
For the lovely month of May

Poles upright, reaching for the sky;
And us, wee ones going round and round;
It was the month of May
And our teachers did say
Dance children dance
For the lovely month of May

This patterning, of futures perhaps;
Lessons, constructing dreams, forging harmony;
It was the month of May
And our teachers did say
Dance children dance
For the lovely month of May.

  2. Children like a disruption to the routine, though they are apt to question as much as take advantage of the opportunity to enjoy the dance.

  3. So many times, traditions come into our lives just because we are told... We should always dance because we want to though. I hope after a while, the children did danced because they heart the music, saw the colors, felt the energy... ♥

  4. To be told to dance because it's lovely does not always mean you feel it's lovely... Hope the children love it.

  5. Fascinating to me (and the video too) as I have never actually seen a Maypole dance. Not a tradition here.

  6. This is wonderful, Gillena. Is this what your teacher actually sang or is it what you think she might have, should have, been singing? I can remember our teacher calling the dance but getting us all mixed up. It really didn't work for her, the one I remember. There may have been another that we didn't even get the dance started, I seem to remember that too.

  7. Usually some folk song would be sung to the May pole dance when i was a child at Primary School(a long time ago(✿◠‿◠). The video is a recent one and was used to give a glimpse in Maypole Trinidad and Tobago today. Thanks for dropping in Jim

    much love...
