UNREQUITED
She lay there like a  paper doll

Cast to a windy day

All resolve is spoken in the colour pink

And consciousness knows no kindness

How many rocks need be stationed

To the rigors of love unrequited

How many hearts smashed on the altar of

Fruitless strawberry bushes

Should she stay there bruised

Like grapes underfoot

Like garbage strewn

Like an eight day week

  2. That last stanza begs a question if she will stay there or not. Love your interpretation of what happens when love is unrequited. Never thought of adding strawberries and grapes into the canvas but the emotional distress was well captured.

  7. I agree, Gillena, the subject of the painting does look like a ‘paper doll cast to a windy day’ and I love the line ‘All resolve is spoken in the colour pink’. You’ve captured the emotional response to the ‘rigors of love unrequited’, particularly in the final stanza: ‘Like garbage strewn / Like an eight day week’.
