Monday WRites 65

THE OUTDOOR PICNIC
They tell me of the outdoor picnic
On the green grass in summer sun
Sounds wonderful i have to admit
Friends, neighbours and families group
Freedom celebrates the outdoor picnic
Wearing her colours of red white and blue
Yes folks; i can surely picture it
Night sky comes alive in a different way
Bursts of amazement fireworks predict
Their hearts to honour the fallen braves
In showers of peace at the outdoor picnic

Monday WRites 63

IN EVENING SHADE
I rest in the shade of evening to dwell,
In the abode where contemplation sits;
Not in a yoga mantric pose, no, a spell
Of yawns and legs outstretched, best suits
My manner of cool down evening to dwell,
Here yesterdays, of caresses, like spoonfuls
Melt, in hot tea; a teacup hones its smell
Of lemongrass, a herb, a soothing balm
To calm the tantrums of wish it could tell
Days of happiness past, to, return my heart;
I rest here, in the shade of evening to dwell.

Monday WRites 60

Photo taken at The Indian Caribbean Museum; Waterloo, Trinidad; March 2012

DHOTIS AND ORHNIS
Fatel Razak rode the waves of hope and recovery
To sun baked days, in fields of King Sugar and Rum
Bare footed, bison and man, worked a path roughly
Strewn, with a music; orientally, ornately, flavoured
Yards of cloth carried waves of hope and recovery
Kholed eyes of women sought wrapped men in dhotis
Humbling themselves, to tread new mud, in a country
Squelched between their toes, their grip of a culture
Of homeland old, to eschew on the way to posterity
The rotis and chokas strengthened their tired bones
And daily they aspired on waves of hope and recovery

HIBISCUS
[version Sunday 29th May 2016]
She decorates hedges with delight
Pesky little girls, stick their tongues out
She however never ever, gets in a fight
Under skies, where bloom cumulus clouds
And a house where dogs bark, hedges with delight
Looping butterflies in passing may rest
Swaying in furls, what a pleasurable sight
Then off they go, on their journeying
All is profusion, in her blooming might
Wings dancing to the beat of a breeze
Left behind now, familiar, hedges with delight

TWITTERED IN
Today i awake to twittering birds
Taste of night still clings to my tongue
Void of awakening fills my empty words
Sights from faraway spheres to inform
Hence, today i awake to twittering birds;
Still i hold the grey of tumbling thoughts
From sleep-drome where nothing girds
Fancy flights of wings effortless in form
Words tell tales in seconds and thirds
Thirsty my lips from wandering in awe
Whence, today i awake to twittering birds

NEW
What's new? we often ask, when filling gaps;
Expecting in turn, differences, between
Sunsets and sunrises, of yesterday's lapse;
Indeed, life shifts in particles, minute dust,
Ever in motion, thoughts unwind, filling gaps
Words speak, layering over creation's plans;
Nothing is new? only freshly served? perhaps!
Daily bread, consuming hunger, rewarding then
Task of nature, in bountiful kneading, overlaps
Giants are slumping, babies are crying, tis so
Will it ever stop? courage, when filling gaps.

SECRETS ALIVE IN THE NIGHT
Shrouded thus, in dark secrets of night,
Shy moons hide, in obscure clouds;
Shadows ply their sinister plight,
For all is mystery ever unknown,
Silhouettes ride yon secrets of night,
Hurried messenger, mounts trusty steed
Loathsome arena, jumbies might;
Falling stars, no wish to deny,
Whispered yearnings to skyward sight;
Such is the ether in hidden carousal,
Never never, revealing secrets of night.

MAY SIGNALING
The rains came with cooling breath,
Let nameless wildflowers colour life,
With gentle urging, place a wreath,
A maiden's head to garland then;
Leaf buds sprout, under cooling breath
Spreading smiles to silver tinged skies
Pliable clay, is earth here beneath
Craft your daydreams to rainbow worth
Place thee ponderings in fitted sheath
May is here; with ribbons a twining
In showy patterns around cooling breath

DAWN AND QUIET
Loud, the voices of men, in the quiet street,
And early morning noises from garbage trucks;
Workers risen so diligently, on their feet,
Clear the way for another day;
That ritual commotion in the quiet street,
Announce the return, from the realm of sleep;
Yet, still not heard, a birdie’s tweet;
Day in, day out, there will be rubbish;
The tropical air, cool, will greet,
Those coming in from the night,
Conscious, to early risers in the quiet street.

Monday WRites 48

MORNING
Canopy of morning, the stars rest now
In a cloud tinted pink, the marquee states morning
Feathered heralds from every bough,
Have a say in democratic parlance, to shape the day
Courage paints the sun rays radiant, the stars rest now
Once i stood, handbag shouldered, with lunch brown bagged
To the echo of honking horns streaming somehow
Issues of bread and butter salt, garlic and theater
Back then everyone was going through the door to allow
Empty houses to sleep, dream, and wait the din of returning
Morning, i while away in poesy, as the stars rest now

MUD MAS
Early Monday morning, and de mud mas come out
An every body who is any body watching
How de mas showoff, walking 'bout
Like he own the road, de road is he own
But wat yuh expect? early Monday, when de mas come out
More whine than a winery could distill
An more mud than a pig with ah snout
Could slobber in ah lifetime
Jouvert, jouvert Monday without a doubt
Dutty smiling mud mas day
Earlier than the sun, de mud mas come out
