[The Great Day of His Wrath by John Martin 1789 – 1854 from google]

Our Swelter

We swelter in a spell of hot days,

Not knowing what hell is, yet

Giving affirmation to heat and its ways.

Will our minds expand to set;

Standards,  none of which exist?

Scientists warned of climate change,

But verily some insist,

That scripture seeks our spell to range,

Between good behaviour and bad;

All is lost are the sayers of boom,

Lets make their faces to look sad;

So we kill and ambush to our doom.

  1. "Not knowing what hell is, yet " That pause before yet says it all. Climate change, war. . .and on . It does seem like we are headed for our doom.

  6. I'm daily astonished at how the advent of climate change is being ignored by just about everyone. Myself too! The real effort, stopping use of fossil fuels, are being ignored by corporates and governments. We can recycle as much as we like and will make the littlest difference.

  7. We are indeed (again) destroying paradise for a hell of our own making.

  8. These lines are so powerful, Gillena:
    ‘We swelter in a spell of hot days,
    Not knowing what hell is’
    and
    ‘Scientists warned of climate change,
    But verily some insist,
    That scripture seeks our spell to range’.

  10. Standing in line in July with hundreds of people to visit the Acropolis in Athens, it was 98 degrees with unbearable humidity!!! Winters in New England are becoming warmer. Ocean levels are rising and the waters are becoming warmer making tropical storms more severe. Yup - climate change is definitely not a hoax!
