LOOK! AN ELEPHANT
His skin so rough,
Or was it her skin, so
Tough; big and gentle looking
With doleful eyes expressing,
The journeys of a circus;
Such is life -
Pages written in with ink of expressing;
A performance becomes a rite of passage
Within reach and within bounds
Of caution;
Sitting up there in the stands
You look, and you gawk,
You leave the circus,
And tear up your ticket,
The keepsake is fresh new understandings,
Becoming memories etched.

In the zoos and circuses of my youth, their eyes were doleful indeed.

Yes. I watched a film the other night about a circus elephant that was not suited to that horrible way of life (not that any elephant is) - but they made her work anyway, till finally she attacked her trainer, then ran into the streets and, of course, was shot. A beautiful animal, abused, forced to live an unlivable and unnatural life - and then shot. I long for a day when there will be no more wild animals acts. Anywhere.
ReplyDeleteThanks for dropping in Sherry: reminds me of my reading of "Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen" with my book club.

I have always felt sorry for the elephants at zoo or circuses (actually here in Sweden it's no longer allowed), yet for a child it's a lifetime memory to be close to those beasts.
