[John Atkinson Grimshaw, Silvery Moonlight (1836-1893) public domain, courtesy dVerse Poets Pub]

One Only

Skeletal trees in the dead of night,

Spread beneath a sky in silent awe,

Framing a moon serving her light,

For all to spectacle when outside,

But only one in the dead of night,

Wished  to saunter there outdoors,

For this particular moonlit sight,

Maybe not yet the deep autumn,

This moon though shining bright

Has had various stories all to tell

Of one out there in the dead of night.

  1. Your first line hooked me Gillena "Skeletal trees in the dead of night."
I picked the same painting and also was thinking of waya to describe the trees...
    Very Nice! 🩵

  2. I too love the skeletal trees, Gillena, and would love to hear the stories the moon has to tell. The repetition of ‘in the dead of night’ is very effective.

Great opening Gillena, We already have an indication forthwith of the subdued feelings generally in the poem. A wonderful write-up!
