Dance The Bele by Karin Best image from google dot com

SPAWN
swing children sway,
sway for the rhythm of chantwell,
chantwell words from the mouth,
mouth of griots, souls of the landed,
landed here in new sounds,
sounds to mourn the loss of mother land;
mother land expands, to birth fresh voices,
voices of rapso, shaping this identity,
this identity of third world cultures,
third world cultures of first class music,
music of steel bands, and kaiso singers,
kaiso singers: telling, telling, telling of,
telling of ancients, and spawn of futures

  10. I love the chained effect of the lines ending and beginning with the same word/words. This creates the cyclic effect of the dance itself.

  11. It makes me think about the connection to my roots. First gen Americans always seem to straddle two different worlds.

    ". . . .to birth fresh voices,
voices of rapso, shaping this identity,
this identity of third world cultures,
third world cultures of first class music,"

    I felt transported.

  14. Really cool how you repeated the ending of the previous line in the start of the next lines. Very effective....almost creates a chanting sort of feel to it!

  15. My daughter used to feel the way you recite here, Gillena. That was when she went to Trinidad with her Hubby. Now she likes getting away from our crowds.
